Zubaida canal

ZUBAIDA, A MUSLIM QUEEN

On the bank of River Dejlah (now called River Tigris, in Iraq) a crowd had gathered outside the beautiful palace of the queen, waiting for her audience. The queen appeared in the balcony and very gracefully addressed the crowd: "Today I close all the account books on the canal. Those who owe me money need not to pay back. And those whom I owe, will be paid immediately and double the amount." Saying this, she ordered that the account books be thrown into the river and said: "My reward is with Allah."

The queen was none other than Zubaida, the daughter of the Abbasid caliph Mansur's elder son, Jaffer, the cousin and wife of the richest and the most powerful of the caliphs, Haroon al-Rashid (170-193 Hijra), the fifth Abbasid caliph. She ordered that a canal be built up to Mecca to provide drinking water to pilgrims. The canal, a remarkable feat of engineering and construction at that time when no modern technology was available, was named after her – Nehr-e-Zubaida (Zubaida Canal). It served the believers for more than one thousand years.

The queen had a passion for serving humanity. After having improved the road used by the pilgrims – 900 miles of desert from Kufa to Medina and Mecca – still there in south Kufa and known as Darb-e-Zubaida, the newly built canal was another feat that she had accomplished. Till she died in 226 Hijra, about 32 years after her husband's death, serving humanity remained her prime goal.

In those days there was an acute shortage of water in Mecca. The pilgrims coming for Hajj solely depended on ZamZam water. There were no other source from where water could be provided to the pilgrims in the arid plains of Arafat, Mina and Muzdalfa.

Realizing this difficulty, the second caliph, Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, while performing Hajj in 17 Hijra, made some emergency arrangements to increase the supply of water. Later, the companions of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be upon Him) Hazrat Abdullah bin Amer and Amir Muawiyah also made several arrangements but all the efforts could not meet the increasing demand of water. The pilgrims continued suffering.

During the time of Caliph Haroon al-Rashid, water shortage during Hajj became so acute that one pail of water would sell for 20 dirham. The additional arrangements made by the caliph also did not bring relief to the pilgrims. After his death in 193 Hijra, Zubaida went for Hajj. The water problem in Mecca grieved her so much that she immediately decided to make a great canal to solve the water problem forever.

She called prominent engineers and surveyors from different parts of the world to build the canal. After surveying the entire area they decided to bring the canal from Hunnain valley where a water spring from the mountains provided water to the residents and for irrigation. The valley of Hunnain is the same valley where the Holy Prophet had fought a battle called Ghazwa-e-Hunnain with the infidels. The area was rocky, the land was barren and dry, and the weather very hot. It was very difficult to sustain a canal on the surface of the earth, so the engineers planned to make a subterranean canal in the form of a tunnel (aqueduct), with water stations raised above the ground at different intervals, wherefrom people could meet their water needs.

At the orders of Zubaida, the entire area of Hunnain valley, which contained spring and other sources of water, was bought by paying a huge amount of money. To bring the water through the mountains was nothing less than a Herculean task, which required a large number of manpower, enormous funds and expertise for cutting the mountains and digging the barren and rocky hills. Nothing could frustrate her determination.

"For each stroke of spade and shovel, I'm ready to give a dirham if needed", saying this she ordered to launch the work.

After several years of hard work, the canal was eventually brought all the way down to Jabal-e-Rahma (the Mountain of Blessings) in Arafat, and then to Mina and Muzdalfa. The spring water from Hunnain valley and whatever water sources found on the way were converged into the canal. The water supply through this canal brought a great relief to the pilgrims as well as to the locals.

In 245 Hijra, an earthquake in Mecca made several cuts and cracks in the canal but they were immediately repaired at the behest of the sitting caliph. Later, several rulers made additional improvements to the canal.

With the passage of time the canal seriously suffered from lack of repair and maintenance, and consequently the supply of water was stopped. Also, over the span of several centuries, new sources of water had already been made available to meet the water needs and therefore no attention was given to restore the canal.

In 1295 Hijra, a committee was formed by the Saudi Government to look after the repair and maintenance of the canal. The committee was able to regulate its water. But unfortunately in 1344 Hijra, a huge flood in Numan valley damaged the canal and its water supply stopped for three months. King Abdul Aziz, who took over in 1343 Hijra, had it repaired but in the beginning of 1400 Hijra the water of the canal stopped completely due to certain reasons and could no be restored.

In recent times, the rulers of Saudi Arabia took special interest to meet the water needs of the pilgrims. In addition to bringing in more supplies of water to Mecca, they installed a water desalination plant, 100 kilometres away from Mecca, which now meets the water needs during the Hajj season. The plant, built in four years, was inaugurated by the late King Fahad on July 21, 1988. This, however, did not leave the great canal forgotten.

The current king of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah (then crown prince), in 2001, gave the instructions to revive the canal to substantiate the water supply to Mecca and save the remarkable heritage of the Muslim Queen, which served the Ummah for more than one thousand years!

Dr Israr Ahmed introduction

Profile Introduction | Dr Israr Ahmad passes away
Show as single page

Dr. Israr Ahmed, (Urdu: اسراراحمد, born April 26, 1932) is a Pakistan-based Muslim religious figure who has been described as well-known among Muslims in Pakistan, India, the Middle East, and North America.[1] Born in East Punjab, (now part of Haryana) in India, the second son of a government servant, he is the founder of the Tanzeem-e-islami, an off-shoot of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
He has spent the "last forty years" actively engaged in "reviving the Qur'an-centered Islamic perennial philosophy and world-view" with "the ultimate objective of establishing a true Islamic State, or the System of Khilafah." [1] Ahmed is skeptical of the efficacy of "parliamentary politics of give-and-take" in establishing an "Islamic politico-socio-economic system" as implementing this system is a "revolutionary process".
Early life and education
Dr. Israr Ahmad was born on April 26, 1932 in Hisar (a district of East Punjab, now a part of Haryana) in India, the second son of a government servant. He graduated from King Edward Medical College (Lahore) in 1954 and later received his Master's degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Karachi in 1965. He came under the influence of Abul Ala Maududi as a young student, worked briefly for Muslim Student's Federation in the Independence Movement and, following the creation of Pakistan in 1947, for the Islami Jamiyat-e-Talaba and then for the Jamaat-e-Islami. Dr. Israr Ahmad resigned from the Jama`at in April 1957 because of its involvement in the electoral politics, which he believed was irreconcilable with the revolutionary methodology adopted by the Jama'at in the pre-1947 period.
Religious work
While still a student and an activist of the Islami Jami`yat-e-Talaba, Dr. Israr Ahmad became a Mudarris (or teacher) of the Qur'an. Even after resigning from the Jama`at, he continued to give Qur'anic lectures in different cities of Pakistan, and especially after 1965 spent a great deal of time studying the Quran.
In 1967 Dr. Israr Ahmadin wrote “Islamic Renaissance: The Real Task Ahead”, a tract explaining his basic belief. This was that a rebirth of Islam would be possible only by revitalizing Iman (faith) among the Muslims -- particularly educated Muslims -- and the propagation of the Qur'anic teachings in contemporary idiom and at the highest level of scholarship is necessary to revitalize Iman. This undertaking would remove the existing dichotomy between modern physical and social sciences on the one hand, and Islamic revealed knowledge on the other.
In 1971 Ahmad gave up his medical practice to devote himself full time to the Islamic revival. In 1972 he established or helped establish the Markazi Anjuman Khuddam-ul-Qur'an Lahore, Tanzeem-e-Islami was founded in 1975, and Tahreek-e-Khilafat Pakistan was launched in 1991.
Dr. Israr Ahmad first appeared on Pakistan Television in 1978 in a program called Al-Kitab; this was followed by other programs, known as Alif Lam Meem, Rasool-e-Kamil, Umm-ul-Kitab and the most popular of all religious programs in the history of Pakistan Television, the Al-Huda, which made him a household name throughout the country.[citation needed] Although he did not like to receive it personally, Dr. Israr Ahmad was awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1981. He has to his credit over 60 Urdu books on topics related to Islam and Pakistan, 9 of which have been translated into English and other languages.

While still a student and an activist of the Islami Jami`yat-e-Talaba, Dr. Israr Ahmad gained considerable fame and eminence as a Mudarris (or teacher) of the Holy Qur'an. Even after resigning from the Jama`at, he continued to give Qur'anic lectures in different cities of Pakistan, and especially after 1965 he has, according to his own disclosure, invested the better part of his physical and intellectual abilities in the learning and teaching of the Qur'anic wisdom.
Dr. Israr Ahmad wrote an extremely significant tract in 1967 in which he explained his basic thought — that an Islamic Renaissance is possible only by revitalizing the Iman (true faith and conviction) among the Muslims, particularly their intelligentsia. The revitalization of Iman, in turn, is possible only by the propagation of the Qur'anic teachings and presenting the everlasting wisdom of the Book of Allah (SWT) in contemporary idiom and at the highest level of scholarship. This undertaking is essential in order to remove the existing dichotomy between modern physical and social sciences on the one hand and the knowledge revealed by Almighty Allah (SWT) on the other. This tract is available in English as “Islamic Renaissance: The Real Task Ahead”.
Dr. Israr Ahmad gave up his thriving medical practice in 1971 in order to launch a full-fledged and vigorous movement for the revival of Islam. As a result of his efforts, the Markazi Anjuman Khuddam-ul-Qur'an Lahore was established in 1972, Tanzeem-e-Islami was founded in 1975, and Tahreek-e-Khilafat Pakistan was launched in 1991.

Dr. Israr Ahmad first appeared on Pakistan Television in 1978 in a program called Al-Kitab; this was followed by other programs, known as Alif Lam Meem, Rasool-e-Kamil, Umm-ul-Kitab and the most popular of all religious programs in the history of Pakistan Television, the Al-Huda, which made him a household name throughout the country. Although he did not like to receive it personally, Dr. Israr Ahmad was awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1981. He has to his credit over 60 Urdu books on topics related to Islam and Pakistan, 9 of which have been translated into English and other languages.
In the context of Qur'anic exegesis and understanding, Dr. Israr Ahmad is a firm traditionalist of the genre of Maulana Mehmood Hassan Deobandi and Allama Shabeer Ahmad Usmani; yet he presents Qur'anic teachings in a scientific and enlightened way, being also a disciple of Allama Iqbal and Dr. Muhammad Rafiuddin, and also because of his own background in science and medicine. Concerning the internal coherence of and the principles of deep reflection in the Qur'an, he has essentially followed the thinking of Maulana Hameed Uddin Farahi and Maulana Ameen Ahsan Islahi, though even here he has further developed their line of argument. Dr. Israr Ahmad believes in a dynamic and revolutionary conception of Islam, and in this regard he is a disciple of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and Maulana Sayyid Abul A`la Maududi.

For the last forty years or so, Dr. Israr Ahmad has been actively engaged not only in reviving the Qur'an-centered Islamic perennial philosophy and world-view but also reforming the society in a practical way with the ultimate objective of establishing a true Islamic State, or the System of Khilafah. He has widely traveled abroad and the audio and video tapes of his Qur'anic discourses in Urdu and English languages have circulated in thousands throughout the world.

A master's thesis, entitled Dr. Israr Ahmad's Political Thought and Activities, was written by Ms. Shagufta Ahmad in the Islamic Studies department of Canada's Mac Gill University. This thesis is available from Markazi Anjuman Khuddam-ul-Qur'an Lahore.
Dr. Israr Ahmed relinquished the leadership of Tanzeem-e-Islami in October, 2002  on grounds of bad health and Hafiz Aakif Saeed is the present Ameer of the Tanzeem to whom all rufaqaa of Tanzeem renewed their pledge of Baiyah.

Some questions answerd by Riaz Ahmd Gohr Shahi

Q.1. Who is superior among Muslims, Jews and Christians in your perception?
Ans:There is a belief in every religion that its Prophet has supreme dignity, and the very same belief became the reason of wars among men of book. It is better you should go into the meetings of these Prophets through spirituality then you shall come to know that what dignity is possessed by whom and who is bearing what status. As for as me is concerned, one is admirable and is highly ranked who has love for Allah in ones' heart, no matter what religion one belongs to. (without love of the beloved, O' Sachal, what is infidelity, what is Islam) Just as your eye hangs about the shining star likewise Allah too notices the shining hearts, it does not matter that those are religious or non religious.
Q.2. Is spiritualism only confined to Islam?
Ans: Infact spirituality is not associated with Religion. It is to awaken the souls/spiritual entities inside human body. Some people use to absorb the light of Moon, Sun even Candle within them and acquire many types of abilities like telepathy, Hypnotism, mesmerism etc but this is connected with creations only. It is not possible to approach the vision of God through these mean/ways. Some people use to absorb the light of the name of God (Allah) within their bodies. They match the name Allah Allah with their heartbeats, then (Noor) the Divine Light ( due to the name Allah Allah) penetrate from blood and approach into the souls, then souls get enlightened by (Noor) the light of God, then through dream or vigilance (transcendental meditation) they starts cognize by God and able to approach different places for stroll, then these souls emerge from state of hear and goes to the state of sight/vision.
Q.3. Why it is necessary to have permission of heart meditation before starting this
practice?
Ans: Religions are like Boats and the Scholars are like navigators. If either one is defective it is impossible to reach the destination. However the Saints do take the damaged Boats (people) safely to the shore. It is in fact the remembrance by heart that cannot be performed without permission. You can perform meditation of all attributed names without taking permission, but the personal Name of God "Allah" cannot be performed until allowed. You are saying your supererogatory late night prayers while the devil standing at a corner is laughing since, according to him, your heart is in his hands and he can twist it at his will. And then there comes a time when you think why you cannot say even the essential prayers while earlier you used to say prayers regularly and also perform late night prayers. This all happens because the Satan has diverted your heart. However, you will like that when you perform worship, this personal Name of God of 'Allah' should penetrate in your hearts. The Satan is worried because if the personal Name of God of 'Allah' enters your heart, then what is left for him, since the light burns the Satan. The Satan has a Hindu force which is ordered by him to go and destroy by any means the person engaged inremembrance of Allah. He orders them to stop that man from incantation of Allah lest it should enter his heart. For this purpose, the Satan first of all enters your homes. Your family members come to know that you repeat Allah and they will oppose you, scare you. When the Satan is not successful in this effort, he will enter house of some prayer leader/priest (moulvi) who will warn you that the remembrance will ruin you. When you still do not obey him, the army of Satan willdamage your business. On your continued resistance, they will turn you mad. People will think what happened to this man who used to recite Allah and has now become insane. And mind that if you do the remembrance of heart with the permission of a perfect guide, then the source where you get this remembrance, will be provided with a divine army from Allah. Whenever the satanic forces attack at you, the divine forces will retaliate and they will set in fight and meanwhile you will have the opportunity to perform Allah. If someone is not strong enough to obtain permission, he cannot succeed in the mention of Allah. This is the only meditation of heart through which one can approach God face to face without any veil.
Q. 4. What is Muraqaba (vigilance or transcendental meditation )?
Ans: Muraqaba is literally journey/meditation in which the soul leaves the Human body. Many people try to engage in Muraqaba without awakening the spiritual entities (Lataif/Shaktain) and without learning spiritual strength. They either fail to reach the meditative state or become the object of the satanic modalities. The meditation is for illuminated people, whose the self has been modified and the Qalb has been purified. This type of meditation is foolish for common folk, no matter what type of physical worship is used (to achieve this). To collect and gather the strength of the spiritual entities by light and then to travel a place is what is known as Muraqaba.

Riaz Ahmed Gohar Shahi (Urdu:ریاض احمد گوہر شاہی; born 25 November 1941) is a spiritual leader and the founder of the spiritual movements Messiah Foundation International (MFI) and Anjuman Serfaroshan-e-Islam.[1][2][3] He is controversial for being declared the MehdiMessiah, and Kalki Avatarby the MFI.[4][5][6]
Central to his beliefs are the concepts of divine loveand a non-discriminatory approach to God in regard to a person's castenation or religion. According to Shahi, every human has ability to develop a spiritualpower to approach to the essence of God.

Contents

Early life

Shahi was born on 25 November 1941, in the village of Dhok Gohar Shah in the district ofRawalpindi of British India. He is a fifth generation descendant of the Sufi Baba Gohar Ali Shah.[7]
At the age of twenty, when he was the owner of F. Q. Steel Industries, Shahi began to search forspirituality, seeking out the saints and dervishes of the time. Eventually he became disillusioned in this search, and, disappointed in not receiving spiritual benevolence, he returned to work. Gohar Shahi then married and had three children.[7]
Gohar Shahi left his work, family and parents and went to Shorkot, where he read the book Noor ul Huda (Light of Guidance),[8] written by Sultan Bahu. He then went to Sehwan Sharif for self-mortification and peace of heart, and spent a period of three years in the mountains of Sehwan Sharif and the forest of Laal Bagh in self-purification.[7]

Literary works

Gohar Shahi authored a number of books and treatises, including one based on Sufi poetry known as Taryaq-e-Qalb, roughly translating to the "'Cure of Hearts'". One of his most prominent books isDeen-e-Ilahi (The Religion of God). Works by Gohar Shahi include:

Messiah Foundation International considers Shahi to be the author of the "Goharian Philosophy of Divine Love", a set of principles upon which the organization is founded.[11] Shahi also authors a monthly magazine, Hatif-e-Mehdi, which is banned in Pakistan for allegedly containing material offensive to the religious feelings of Muslims there.[12]

Sufi views

Hisham Kabbani and Gohar Shahi during Gohar Shahi's visit to America in 1997.
The teachings of Gohar Shahi have been a source of controversy. Some orthodox theological scholars condemn his teachings as blasphemy,[13] while others, such as Hisham Kabbani, have sat at his feet as well as praised him.[14]
Classical singers such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ghulam Farid Sabri have been presented the message of Shahi, which they have praised and sponsored. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was quoted as saying "The message of Hazrat Riaz Gohar Shahi is the greatest message I have ever heard." In Qawwali events in Japan and Germany, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan personally distributed leaflets in favour of Shahi.[15]Aziz Mian has also presented a qawwali in praise of Shahi at a Jashan-e-Shahi (which celebrate the day Shahi was named the Mehdi, according to his followers) event.[16]

Claims and criticism

Gohar Shahi speaking during International Ism-e-Zaat Allah Conference held in Karachi on 7 October, 1996 organized by International Spiritual Movement Anjuman Serfaroshan-e-Islam
Opposition to Gohar Shahi and his followers stemmed from claims made by Shahi and his followers that were strongly opposed by orthodox Islamic theologians in Pakistan and abroad.[17] Shahi was accused of claiming the status of prophetbut Shahi denied such accusations.[3][17] His teachings have been condemned by Muslim religious leaders and the Pakistani government.[13]
Many attempts were made on the lives of Shahi and his close follower, Younus AlGohar,[18] including a petrol bomb thrown into AlGohar's residence in Manchester[18] (where Shahi stayed when he toured the United Kingdom)[19] and an attack with a hand grenade during a discourse at his home in KotriPakistan.[19] A high price tag was put on his head in Pakistan.[19]
Shahi's books have been banned by the government of Pakistan,[13] and his followers are not allowed to meet in public.[20]

Several cases were filed against Gohar Shahi and his followers. Shahi was booked in 1997 on charges of allegedly murdering a woman who had come to him for spiritual treatment.[3] He and many of his followers[21] have been convicted under Islamic blasphemy laws[17][22] by an antiterrorist court in Sindh.[23] After he fled to England, Shahi was convicted in absentia,[21][22]receiving sentences that totaled approximately 59 years.[17] In February 2002, prior to any decision on appeals filed with the High Court of SindhArdeshir Cowasjee claimed in an article he wrote for Dawn, the Pakistani newspaper, that unnamed people who identified themselves to him as office-bearers of the All-Faith Spiritual Movement told him that Gohar Shahi died abroad, but this report was unconfirmed.[17]

Claims of being the Mehdi, Messiah and Kalki Avatar from his followers

Gohar Shahi claimed to have met with Jesus in America.[24] Shahi's supporters claim that his face became prominent on the MoonSun, nebula star and the Black Stone in Mecca,[25] and that these appearances were signs from God that Gohar Shahi was the awaited Imam MehdiMessiah, andKalki Avatar. The alleged images induced greater legal and religious opposition.[20] Shahi has also supported this claim, saying that God had revealed the images of Shahi on the Moon and various locations, for which Shahi himself was not responsible, and if questions should be raised, they should be raised with God.[26] Messiah Foundation International claims the alleged images to be signs from God, pointing to Shahi being the awaited Mehdi, and quote religious texts[27] and sayings from the likes of Nostradamus,[28] and Ja'far al-Sadiq to support it.

Journalists in Pakistan questioned Shahi,
"Many believe that you are the Mehdi, and God has revealed signs unto them which say that you are the Mehdi, but you do not officially announce that you are the Mehdi, why?" Shahi gestured towards himself and answered, "Does Imam Mehdi not know the law of Pakistan? He knows that the law of Pakistan declares that 'whomsoever claims to be the Mehdi, put him in jail'. I have given the signs of his [Mehdi's] characteristics, which the Mehdi knows and none other. Now, it is up to people to recognize him and believe him".[26]
Of the groups following Shahi, Messiah Foundation International claims that Shahi is the awaited Mehdi, Messiah, and Kalki Avatar while Anjuman Serfaroshan-e-Islam does not. According to MFI's website Shahi is the Awaited Messiah, but they deny that Shahi is another form of Jesus and claim that Jesus has also returned to support the Mehdi.

Disappearance or death

Gohar Shahi addressing Christians in New YorkUSA on 2 October, 1999.

Beliefs of followers

Shahi was reported to have "mysteriously" disappeared in 2001, in LondonUK, which some followers took to be similar tooccultation. Rumors regarding the disappearance spread, and while some follower believe he died, others believe that he is to return soon, according to the prophecies of the Mehdi. His followers largely split into two organizations after his disappearance, Messiah Foundation International and the Anjuman Serfaroshan-e-Islam.
Younus AlGohar claims that Shahi has merely disappeared[29] formed Messiah Foundation International, claiming to be under the guidance of Shahi. This group of followers deny the demise of Shahi, and cite Shahi's apparent warning that he would disappear one day but later return.
The Anjuman Serfaroshan-e-Islam asserts that Shahi died, and built a tomb for him at the Markazi Aastana in Kotri,[17] where devotees perform pilgrimage. Shahi's family, including his wife, five sons and a daughter, still resides in Kotri.

Press reports

Reports from press sources also vary in their accounts of Shahi's fate. According to a report by the Hindustan Times in 2008, Gohar Shahi is considered by some as "...a living Pakistani spiritual leader, 'His Lordship' Riaz Gauhar Shahi, a divine man (the 'Promised Messiah of Islam, Hinduism and other faiths')" and is serving a life sentence.[30] The Indian news agency PTI, however, reported in 2008 that he was based in the United Kingdom after being convicted of blasphemy by the High Court of Sindh.[4] This view is supported by the Indian Express which reported in 2008 that Shahi had fled to the United Kingdom and was presently based there.[31] Zee News also supported this claim.[32]
According to the Pakistani Press Foundation Shahi died in 2001.[4] An article from 2006 in theSunday Telegraph reports that Shahi died in 2003,[4] and a 2009 article in Your Local Guardianalso says he was reported to have died in 2003.[29]
